The Greene County Ram girls and boys teams both lost Saturday night non-conference basketball to the Jaguars of Southeast Valley in Gowrie. This is the first season for the Jaguars and Southeast Valley, formed by a reorganization of the Southeast Webster and Prairie Valley school districts.
In the girls game, the Rams lead the Lady Jags 28-20 at halftime and 39-32 after three quarters. The Rams were still ahead 49-39 with just more than four minutes left to play in the game when the Lady Jags started a run. The score at the final buzzer was 58-53 in favor of the home team. The Rams didn’t help their cause, giving the Lady Jags 16 points at the charity line in the final quarter.
Lead scorer for the Rams was Kayla Mobley with 25 points. Stacy Mears scored 12 points, all in the first half. Jolee Wessling scored six, Hannah had four points, and Kenna Marquardt and Tressa Rasmussen each scored two points.
The Ram girls team is now 4-6 overall.
The boys game followed the same model. The Rams were down by one point, 15-14, at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore Reid Lamoureux in his first varsity start scored 10 of the Rams’ first quarter points. Lead scorer sophomore Trey Tucker didn’t score in the first quarter, but his eight second quarter points helped put the Rams in the lead 30-25 at halftime.
The Jaguars reclaimed the lead in the third quarter and were up 35-32 when the Rams put up 16 unanswered points to lead 48-35 early the fourth quarter. The Jaguars nibbled away at the deficit with the benefit of accurate shooting at the foul line. The Jaguars scored 13 points at the free throw line in the fourth quarter and were unofficially 18 of 23 at the line for the entire game. The Rams shot only 14 for 29 at the foul line for the game.
The Rams were up 57-55 with less than a minute to play, but a Jaguar 3-pointer gave them the lead. Two more free throws gave the Jaguars the final margin of 60-57.
Tucker was closer to his usual mark than he had been in the Friday night game against Roland-Story. The Norsemen held him to only 10 points, 17 points behind his Class 3A leading average of 27 points per game. Against the Jaguars, Tucker scored 22 points. Lamoureux fouled out with two minutes left in the game and 14 points to his credit. Riah Nelsen scored nine points, Landon Braun scored six points, Tyler Beger scored four points and Matthew Gordon scored two points.
The Ram boys are now 4-5 on the season.
